Ahadith on Aspects of Reposing Trust in Allah (swt)

A believer’s reliance upon Allah (swt) can assume many forms across the broad spectrum of daily life. Presented hereunder are authentic traditions of the Prophet (saws) which throw light on some of these aspects.

1. ‘Amr ibn Umayyah reported: A man said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “Shall I release my camel and trust in Allah (swt)?” The Prophet said, “Tie her and trust in Allah (swt).”

(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 731)

2. Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Seventy thousand from my nation will enter Paradise without reckoning. They are those who do not rely on incantations, nor believe in omens, but rather they trust in their Lord.”

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6472)

3. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered the room of Bilal and he found a pile of dates with him. The Prophet said, “What is this, O Bilal?” Bilal said, “They are dates I have stored for you.” The Prophet said, “Woe to you, O Bilal! Are you not afraid they will become your fumes in the Hellfire? Spend them in charity, O Bilal, and do not fear that the One upon the Throne will leave you bereft.”

(al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ lil-Ṭabarānī 2572)

4. Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Were the son of Adam to flee from his provision as he flees from death, his provision would surely reach him just as death will reach him.”

(Ḥilyat al-Awliyā’ 7/90 | Grade: Hasan(fair) according to Al-Albani)

5. Ibn Abi Mulaykah reported: Abu Bakr, the truthful, may Allah be pleased with him, might drop the rein from his hand, so he would strike the leg of his camel to make it kneel and he would pick it up. They said to him, “Why did you not order us to take care of it?” Abu Bakr said, “My beloved Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded me not to ask people for anything.”

(Musnad Aḥmad 65 | Grade: Hasan li Ghayrihi (fair due to external evidence): Al-Arna’ut)

6. Salim reported: Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, would say to a man if he intended to travel, “I bid you farewell as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would bid farewell. The Prophet would say: ‘I leave you under the protection of Allah (swt) in your religion, your trusts, and your final deeds.’”
