Although the work of the well-known tableegh was started in this very poor and underdeveloped region of the world, it has, within 40 years of its inception by a single man, quietly crossed many shores to reach the very heartlands of those regions that have for centuries waged fierce wars against Islam, and converting to Islam thousands of those who have been taught to hate it. Without a conventional office, without a permanent source of income and without the use of propaganda literature, this movement has been able to attract millions of Muslims every year to its cause. Today a traveler can sight its workers attired in humility and dedication in the streets of Holland as well as of Indonesia on the same day.

Indeed its astonishing rate of development and expansion engulfing so many nations, peoples and races and in the absence of any material, political or intellectual aid is the most remarkable human phenomenon of this century. Unaffiliated to any philosophy, sect or dogma and thinking fit to work at the grass-roots level than attending to dressings at the top, this work has been the most forceful reply of Islam to the ever-increasing irreligiosity, materialism and hedonism exported by the West to the world of Islam. The work has once again demonstrated Islam’s capability to make a comeback even in the face of most unfavorable conditions. It is undeniable that although a variety of factors have gone into its making, the resurgence of Islam witnessed in our own times, the restoration of confidence of Muslims in Islam and its system of life, owes much to the direct or indirect influences of this dynamic work.

What do its selfless, unassuming and indefatigable workers want? The answer can be summed up in just one short sentence: “For solution to its problems, whether spiritual or temporal, the Muslim ummah must turn inwards and not outwards.” In other words, returning to the Islam as given to it by its Prophet (on whom be peace) the ummah should once again wholeheartedly embrace its two-fold faith in God and in itself. That done, the ummah will find ways open both for success in this world as well as in the more important next. And failing that, no power, no system, no ideology and no amount of striving at the individual or collective level can save it from annihilation at the hands of its enemies in this world and from God’s ire in the next.

That sums up completely the aims of the tableegh work as well as assures us of its future rapid advances so long as its workers rigidly adhere to the rules of hard work, sacrifice and purity of intention. With these qualities they earn the right of Allah’s help. And who is a better helper than Allah ? !
